Giveaway: The G-Free Diet by Elizabeth Hasselbeck

Image
For years, Elisabeth Hasselbeck couldn't figure out what was making her sick. She asked doctors and consulted nutritionists, but no one seemed to have any answers. It wasn't until spending time in the Australian Outback, living off the land on the grueling Survivor TV show, that, ironically, her symptoms vanished. Returning home, she pinpointed the food that made her sick -- gluten, the binding element in wheat. By simply eliminating it from her diet, she was able to enjoy a completely normal, healthy life. But that wasn't all. Hasselbeck discovered the myriad benefits that anyone can enjoy from a gluten-free diet: from weight loss and increased energy to even the alleviation of the conditions of autism.

In this all-inclusive book, Hasselbeck shares her hard-earned wisdom on living life without gluten and loving it. She gives you everything you need to know to start living a gluten-free life, from defining gluten - where to find it, how to read food labels - to targeting g…

Scientists announce the discovery of a 47-million-year-old primate fossil that is set to revolutionize our understanding of human evolution. THE LINK Uncovering Our Earliest Ancestor Little, Brown and Company, May 20, 2009

May 19, 2009, NEW YORK, NY—Scientists have announced today the discovery of a 47-
million-year-old human ancestor. Discovered in the Messel Pit, Germany, the fossil is twenty
times older than most fossils that explain human evolution. Known as “Ida,” the fossil is a
transitional species, showing characteristics of the very primitive nonhuman evolutionary line
(prosimians, such as lemurs), but even more closely those of the human evolutionary line
(anthropoids, such as monkeys, apes, and humans). This places Ida at the very root of anthropoid
evolution—when primates were first developing the features that would evolve into our own.
The scientists’ findings are published today by PLoS One, the open-access journal of the Public
Library of Science.

Giveaway: The Night Gardener by George Pelecanos

Image
From Publishers Weekly - taken from here.
Starred Review. Pelecanos (Drama City) delivers a dignified, character-driven epic that succeeds as both literary novel and page-turner. In 1985, the body of a 14-year-old girl turns up in a Washington, D.C., park, the latest in a series of murders by a killer the media dub "The Night Gardener." T.C. Cook, the aging detective on the case, works with a quiet, almost monomaniacal, focus. Also involved are two young uniformed cops, Gus Ramone, who's diligent, conscientious and unimpressed by heroics, and Dan "Doc" Holiday, an adrenaline junkie who's decidedly less straight.

Fast forward 20 years. Detective Ramone, now married with kids of his own, investigates the murder of one of his teenage son's friends. The homicide closely resembles the earlier unsolved Night Gardener murders. Holiday, now an alcoholic chauffeur and bodyguard, follows the case on his own and tracks down Cook, long retired but still obsessed with…

Review: Mating Rituals of the North American WASP by Laura Lipton

I just finished reading Mating Rituals of the North American Wasp. This book reminded me of the movie "What Happens In Vegas". The main character's Peggy and Luke wake up one morning and realize that they married while drunk in Vegas. Peggy is the owner of a New York boutique and Luke is a Sedgwick, which means a huge house and land have fallen into his lap. It's not as glamorous as it sounds. The house Luke and his Great Aunt Abby inhabit is falling apart and Luke wants no part of his heritage. Abby desperately wants to see Luke married to carry on the Sedgwick legacy. After much consideration and Abby's offer to let Luke sell the house if he and Peggy stay married for one year, they decide to stay married and get an annulment when the time comes, splitting the money from the sale of the Sedgwick home. Peggy is happy about this deal because the rent on the shop that she co-owns with her best friend Bex, is doubling. Seems like a win win situation. In t…

Saturday Series: Vampire Diaries by L.J. Smith

I decided that I should give some information about Vampire Diaries by L.J. Smith since it will now be a TV show. I haven't read these books (I know, what the hell? There's a vampire series I haven't read? There's actually a bunch. It's shocking, I know. LOL!)

You can visit the author's site here.

For some reason I kept getting this series and Vampire Academy mixed up. Wouldn't it be cool if there really was a Vampire Academy and you could go and sign up for classes and learn all about being a vampire and if you graduated they would turn you? I haven't read that series other. (Shame, shame) I know.

Author Wednesday: Jane Green

Image
I decided to focus on Jane Green today. I'm a big fan of chick-lit and I enjoy Jane's writing style. I think I read Jemima J in a day. I was so enthralled. Mr. Maybe took 2 days but I went down to a friends house and we went 4-wheeling all day. Jane's books are what I like to call easy, breezy reads. They seem to flow. I hope you all will check her out because you won't be disappointed.

ABOUT JANE:

Jane Green Warburg, who writes as Jane Green, was born in London and has lived in Connecticut for seven years. One of the founding writers behind the genre known as ‘chick lit’, Green now writes novels that reflect the lives of real women today, with all the trials and tribulations that come with real life: from in-laws, motherhood, mid-life crises and loss, all of which are told with Green’s trademark warmth, wit and wisdom.

She began her writing career in entertainment journalism and P.R., the sort of glamorous-sounding but low-wage salt mines in which readers might ex…

Giveaway: Obama's Blackberry by Kasper Hausner

Image
Full Description (Taken from here):
When Obama stated that if elected, he would keep his Blackberry, debate echoed through Washington and among the ranks of the Secret Service. Now, for the first time, We The People are privy to our new leader's epistolary back-and-forths on his wily hand-held device. We're about to discover that his emails (and the replies, from his wife and daughters, Biden, Palen, Rush, Hannity, the new first puppy, and even Bush) are so tuned in to the language of electronic correspondence they come hilariously close to the brink of legibility.

This giftable, imagined glimpse into Obama's beloved Blackberry traverses the mundane and momentous contours of the Commander in Chief's life, from security briefings to spam, baske…
