Review & Giveaway: Twice Bitten by Chloe Neill

Chicago has become the Shapeshifters haven. The master Vampire, Ethan, who has been in Chicago for some time, has decided to all a truce with the Shapeshifters and their leader, Gabriel. Ethan even gave the Shapeshifting leader his newest vampire as a bodyguard and her name is Merit. This wasn't just done as a favor to the Shapeshifters, Ethan has a hidden agenda which is having Merit work as a spy. When Gabriel's life is in danger, Merit soon figures out that this is going to be a really tough job.

The really cool thing about this book is Merit. I was rooting for her throughout the whole book. She's a kick-ass chic with wits. Five stars!

Elaina knows what she wants to do with the rest of her life which is working as an FBI profiler.  Who could have guessed that her first case would be so overwhelming?  There's a serial killer on the loose and he just keeps getting nastier and nastier with each new murder.

Elaina finds herself growing close to Troy, a true crime writer.  She's not sure why she is wasting time with this gorgeous player but the more time they spend together, the more Elaina likes him.  Can they work together to catch this maniac before he makes Elaina one of his unlucky victims?

This is the first book of Laura's that I've read and I'm hooked!  She's an amazing author!  The characters and the story captivated me.  Now I just need to get a hold of some more of her books.

Review: The Making of a Duchess by Shana Galen

Sarah has no idea what it takes to be a spy. How can she possibly gain enough information to prove that the French duke, Julien is a traitor? If she doesn't do this though, her life will drastically change and she is determined to not let that happen.

At first, her only problem seems to be collecting evidence but as she gets closer to Julien, she realizes that her feelings for him are clouding the job she is supposed to complete. Will they be able to work past this and live happily ever after or will both of them be condemned to a life apart?

This is probably one of my favorite historical romances. The plot was amazing and Shana's writing technique kept me intrigued from beginning to end.

Review: Grey Pine by T. Lloyd Winetsky

Phillip didn't have the picture perfect childhood. His father is in love with the bottle and his mom passed away. When Mount Saint Helen erupts, Philips first thought is to learn everything he can about this massive outburst as he can. The disaster hits home and from that point on he finds himself in situations he never could have fathomed.

Phillip is one of those characters that feels oh-so-real. He's the type of person that you can relate to and one who you can't help but like right off the bat. I give this book two thumbs up!

I love short stories that give me a sample of other authors writing style.
There have been several times that I have purchased a collection of short stories or an anthology and ended up getting hooked on some of the authors after reading one short piece.  One great thing about this book is that it covers a wide array of genres which kept my attention better than other books with short stories.  My favorites in this book were:

THE TRUTH IS A CAVE IN THE BLACK MOUNTAINS by Neil Gaiman
THE KNIFE by Richard Adams
UNWELL by Carolyn Parkhurst
THE THERAPIST by Jeffery Deaver
THE CULT OF THE NOSE by Al Sarrantonio

I really enjoyed this book.  There were a few stories I could have done without, but other than that, it's a winner.  I give it 4 stars.

Review: The Jagged Years of Ruthie J. by Ruth Simkin

Ruthie is the complete opposite of everyone in her family. She tells it like she sees it and does what she wants, when she wants. As a teen, she was diagnosed with epilepsy. At the time, epilepsy was thought to be a mental illness and her family sent her to Chestnut Lodge, a mental hospital. Her experience there is one of many nightmares. One of the doctors was crazy but there was one doctor that she clicked with and this doctor became a friend who helped Ruthie pick up the pieces in her life.

This book is one of the most heartfelt books I have ever read. I suffer from depression and I know how frustrating it can be. People ask you questions that you don't have the answers to. If you had the answers, you wouldn't be depressed. Anyway, I felt like Ruthie was a kindred spirit and through this book, I'm sure she will help a lot of people take the time to look inside themselves and realize that they are a survivor. We all may not go through the exact same things in life, but we have survived something and for that we should be thankful.

Review: The Souls of the Fire Dragon by John Wrieden

Description*

A dystopian world with an oppressive government controlled by the Patrician, its ruthless leader, and the Watchman - a secret police.

The Watchman Wreak Havoc...
A large poster near the Watchmen’s headquarters simply read, “THE WATCHMEN ARE WATCHING YOU!”

The House of Fate
Inside an old gothic mansion, Death meets with his father Fate. “Someone has cheated me,” Fate informs his son. Fate has a plan. “The right man in the wrong place can make all the difference. Wake up, Akea, and see the truth.”

The Power and the Fury
Akea was alone; no one could stop or control him. His released fury seemed limitless. A wave of energy rolled over the Watchmen, like energy from an atom bomb rolled up into a small white ribbon.

Akea and Argonath
Some distance ahead, Akea saw something. It looked like a house-sized boulder. On closer inspection, he realized it was the most beautiful thing he had ever seen. Argonath, a dragon, sat watching the three men approach her.

The Cost of Freedom
Captain Seadak walked between the turrets and steadied his men. They hated this post, yet each one stood his ground, burying his fear.

“This is about our children having a home and knowing freedom. We stand here and fight for freedom. That is our glory. This is our time. I want all of you to fight like animals and as fearlessly as dragons. And, tomorrow our children will be free.”

Lately I have been all about sci-fi and fantasy. This book swept me off my feet and took me to another world. It's one of those books that you when you get to the last page you're mind starts replaying the whole book in your mind. John has a knack for fantasy and I'm sure he will be writing many more books as good as this one.

Review & Giveaway: Wrong by David Freedman

Description*

Our investments are devastated, obesity is epidemic, test scores are in decline, blue-chip companies circle the drain, and popular medications turn out to be ineffective and even dangerous. What happened? Didn't we listen to the scientists, economists and other experts who promised us that if we followed their advice all would be well? Actually, those experts are a big reason we're in this mess. And, according to acclaimed business and science writer David H. Freedman, such expert counsel usually turns out to be wrong--often wildly so.
*Copied from here.

There is so much information in this book that make you really start to think about what "experts" say.  I have always been leery about the information I receive from doctors and other professionals.  Like so many things in life, there is never a clear cut answer.  It all depends on interpretation.  I liked having my thoughts reinforced with David's book.

Review & Giveaway: Paul Is Undead by Alan Goldsher

When you think about The Beatles, your mind may think heartthrob at first but in this book, you can see them in a whole new light. If you see them, you better run! John Lennon is a zombie who has a knack for turning others into zombies without anyone noticing. Oh and did I mention that he's forming a rock band? He and Paul are ready to find other members to complete their zombie band. They run into one slight problem. Mick is a zombie slayer making music with the undead. Can you think of anything more ironic?

Sometimes you just need a book that makes you laugh out loud and mutter WTF? I enjoyed this book because everything was so off the wall and it made me remember being a kid and using my imagination to come up with something that will never happen but for a while I get to escape into another world.

Review & Giveaway: Oil: Money, Politics, and Power in the 21st Century

Oil plays such an important role in our lives. Oil, money, politics and power go hand in hand. It's amazing how much we depend on oil just to live our lives daily. I can remember when gas was $.99 per gallon and now it's usually around $2.50 in the area I live in. The price has went up a great deal and there are many reasons. If you want to understand oil and how it controls so much of what we do this is the book for you. Tom gets straight the basics and then elaborates, so the book has a certain flow that is constant throughout.

Review: The Unfaithful Widow by Barbara Barth

Losing a loved one is always difficult and sometimes you need the support of others who have been through the same situation. I have not lost a husband but I have lost loved ones. The essays in this book will help you feel both the loss and provide a bit of a "pick-me-up". Rescuing animals became Barbara's coping tool that allowed her to learn to live again. This book is funny, wise and very insightful.

I think that anyone who has lost a loved one, even if you aren't a widow, you will find parts in these essays that ring true to you.  I love Barbara's voice and I like that she didn't hold back.

Review: Roaring Lions, Cracking Rocks, and Other Gems from Proverbs

The Bible is full of questions and answers. How to live your life is probably the most important question we, as people, need to ask ourselves. Proverbs is one of the most thought provoking books in the Bible because of the wisdom behind it. Warren jumps right in and delivers an easy to understand guide for life according to the book of Proverbs. My favorite thing about Warren's book is the approach to his readers. He doesn't write in a condescending way that some authors take on. He speaks to the reader as a brother or sister.

If you want to learn more about living and the book of Proverbs, this is your best bet. I've already shared my book in the hopes that it touches someone like it touched me.

Review & Giveaway: What's Really Hood!: A Collection of Tales from the Streets

Life in the streets take on a whole new meaning in this urban anthology of "hood" tales compiled by New York Times bestselling author Wahida Clark.

WHAT'S REALLY HOOD!

Black Is Blue by Victor L. Martin delves into the life of a corporate woman who falls
in love with a thug and finds out just how easy it is to stray from the straight and narrow.

Eighteen and hungry Wiz's only addiction to drugs is the money it made. But Crystal changed all of that and shows him just how powerful a woman can be in The P is Free by LaShonda Teague.

In The Last Laugh by Bonta, Bobo, a member of the infamous Eight-Trey street gang, learns that gang life isn't all it's cracked up to be as "street wars" take on
a whole new meaning.

Shawn "Jihad" Trump tells the story of loyalty, love and honor, when The Point Blank Mob is brought to its knees leaving the crew fighting for their lives and freedom in All for Nothing.

And New York Times bestselling author, Wahida Clark, introduces Nina, a woman tired of being disrespected by men who takes revenge to the ultimate level in Makin' Endz Meet.

One of my favorite things about this book is that I got a peek at other authors work. I have been a fan of Wahida after reviewing Payback With Ya Life and Thug Lovin' for Hachette. When I saw that she was representing this book, I requested it immediately. The short stories in this book are fresh, original and real. I thoroughly enjoyed this compilation.
